What is a Group Interview?

23rd September 2017

Group interviews are common in the early stage of the hiring process. An interview is held, but instead of one candidate being interviewed, a group are interviewed together.

A variety of team tasks as well as individual tasks are involved, to assess the effectiveness of the candidates in team environments.

Why do Companies Choose a Group Interview?

A company might choose to use a group interview when they are hiring many candidates for the same role. The interviewer can then gauge multiple personalities, whilst saving time not having to interview each one individually.

They are followed by a one-to-one interview which allows the hirer to get to know the candidate on a personal level.

How You Can Stand Out

A candidate should do the same preparation for a group interview as an individual interview, taking notice of the advertised dress code and abiding by it.

During the interview, the candidate needs to aim to be a leader, whilst being a team player at the same time. Being too timid and not speaking out may mean you get hidden and not remembered by the interviewers. However, not coming across as bossy and having too big of a personality is also important to remember.

What Will Happen During the Group Interview?

A range of team tasks, as well as individual presentations will be used to assess your personality. Some tasks that may take place during the group interview include;

  • An individual presentation on a topic you are passionate about
  • Playing a game of ‘Truth or Not’. This involves putting forward two facts about you, one of which a truth and one a lie.
  • ‘Desert Island Discs’ style situation. Between your team, select the best items to take to a deserted island.

The first task above is being used to analyse how well you can communicate in front of people. The second; how convincing you are. The third; how well you perform in a team environment.

Although group environments can be more daunting, having other people in the interview means you are not alone. Other people will be there with you, and you can use the opportunity to learn from them. Being able to demonstrate your team skills would be hard to get across in a regular interview.
