5 Steps to Take After a Job Interview

18th February 2018

Have you ever been left feeling a little deflated after an interview? Or looked back thinking that you could have done more to make the most of the interview process? Taking the right steps after a job interview can make your job hunt a more positive experience and will help ensure you are doing all you can to guarantee that you have the best chances to secure your dream job.

Reflect

Now is the time to consider how you did in the interview, reflect on the questions asked and your answers to these questions whilst they are fresh in your mind. Try to reflect on what you did well and what you could improve. Look at all of the questions that you were asked and make note of the way you answered. These notes will help you prepare for a second interview or could help you in the future with other interviews if you are unsuccessful.

Follow Up

After your interview ensure that you have called to follow up with your agency or if you haven’t used an agency, email a ‘thank you’ to the person who interviewed you. A follow up call to your recruitment consultant (if you used one) can help you reflect on the interview and will allow them to give valuable feedback to the company you interviewed for. You could use this call to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and allow you to discuss how you felt the interview went.

References

No matter how you think the interview went, make sure you have contacted your references. After your interview a future employer may call references at any point to ensure they are making the right decision. By telling your references that you are looking for work they should expect to be contacted and therefore they will be prepared to give a reference when required to.

Continue your Job Search

Be sure to keep looking for jobs, as this will stop you from missing out on new opportunities. This will also help you keep the momentum going if you did not get the role you were interviewing for. Look at our tips to keep confident in your job search.

Chase for Feedback

A great question to ask in your interview is when you should hear back. If you haven’t received feedback in the allotted time, now would be the time to consider chasing. If the employer said they would only take a week and they haven’t got back to you, you should take an active role in chasing them to come back to you. Sometimes chasing for feedback can be the difference between you getting the role or not. It will make you look more proactive. However, don’t call too much or before they have told you to as this may make you look like you haven’t listened to them or make you look unorganised.
